Tonight I'll be attending an evening Interclub Supersprint held by the WRX/AROCA clubs at SMSP on the North Circuit. I'm just going to shake down the car and have some fun. Had a few last things to do on the car before the event. Luckily SMSP is fairly close to me so I don't have to worry about a 2hr drive like when we go to Wakefield.
Since doing the B swap the car has always done a weird rev hunt on idle sometimes, it would be on and off. I finally figured out what it was! There's a vacuum port on the back of the intake manifold which I've always had open by the looks of it. Got a wee condom for it and the rev hunting went away!
I had noticed the VTEC solenoid was starting to leak oil so I just went ahead and replaced it. The current one in there was minging. I also did the external dizzy o ring.
Decided I should give the spark plugs a check and yeah, they were quite black. Went ahead and put a new set in. I'm thinking of getting a spark plug cleaner, I've seen some before were it's a mini sand blaster inside this canister and you shove the spark plug in the end.
Also did a Penrite 5w40 oil + filter change.
And to finish off the preps, a very last minute wheel alignment.. The day kinda got away from me, you can see some grinder/sheet metal action behind the car, that was my dad and brother making up a new temp battery mounting solution in the boot as I didn't have something solid prior, and there'd be scrutineers tonight.
The steering wheel wasn't straight but it drove straight, so I just dealt with it.
Driving to the track..
Overall a successful night, however there were one or two hiccups along the way. To start with, turns out my fire extinguisher was out of date, and they wouldn't let me out on track without getting one in date, even though it was still well in the green zone on the gauge.. Thanks to Jez who just happened to have a new spare, it was much bigger than mine but we jammed it straight in with tex screws, didn't really have any other options.
I needed to bed in the new RS pads, if you recall to a previous post we did the DC2R/Mini Cooper caliper/rotor conversion. I went out for the 1 lap with safety car to 'learn' the track but it was too hard to bed in with the other cars there.
1st session was interesting, under heavy braking in 2 parts on the track the pedal would vibrate like crazy, shaking the whole car. Once back in the pits, we checked over everything and couldn't see anything.
2nd session the vibration seemed to disappear, maybe something was stuck in the brake area and taking the wheel off/back on fixed it.. No idea.. Issue now was, I had a non stop vibration around the entire track, as you can see in the YouTube vid. I had absolutely no idea what was causing this, and in fact had to put up with it for the entire night.
Apart from that, everything else went smoothly as I got my eye in again having only been here once at the start of 2017. I was placed in the lower groups as my previous time was much slower, so I was going through this field at a fairly decent pace.
I managed a new PB of 1.15.7920 for the night, previous PB being 1.21 or 1.23, I forget. Great to be back at SMSP, really need to try the GP circuit already. Thanks dad and brother for helping with prepping the car today and coming down to the event.
