SMSP GP Prep

On a Friday evening, my mate Myles talked me into doing a SMSP GP track night on the following Thursday.. I had already planned to drop the fuel tank the next morning to fix the cracked hoses I noticed over Christmas, but I knew there was a few other bits I ought to tend to first. It was a full send for the next few days to get this prepared in time..

Fuel tank

The Civic's fuel setup hasn't been touched since I did the EFI conversion back in 2015/2016? Yikes.. I noticed over Christmas the supply hose either side of the fuel filter pictured below had a lot of small cracks in the rubber. I knew if I didn't replace it, now that I've seen it, it'll only do one thing on my next outing..

Plan is to drop the tank, inspect inside the tank to make sure everything is happy, new fuel hose and a new filter. I'd also change from using the old school style of fuel hose clamps and use a 'newer' style for this application.

Fuel tank dropped, after doing this many times across the car, I can get it out in a matter of minutes.

Inside everything looks ok, I couldn't tell if the orange tinge at the bottom was surface rust or just old fuel. I'm going for old fuel, especially as you'd see service rust creeping up the side of the baffle.

Fuel pump cradle looks ok, sock is still attached, however the hose looks quite bloated. Apparently I shouldn't have used this type of hose, but I mean it's held up for this long!

I removed the house to find something stuck inside of it. It turned out to be the section off the end of the pump outlet. I'm curious if it's been like this for a long time, causing the flow to lessen, or if it came off when removing the hose just then..

I'll use a new piece of hose for the pump cradle and leave the metal clip off. Some would say the hose might come off, but considering its pushing the pump down against the cradle I think it's fine.

I got some higher spec fuel hose, which if you look at the first photo in this Fuel tank section, it matches what the return line was and that hasn't cracked at all. Why I used 2 different sizes, you'll have to ask old me.

New fuel filter is the exact same brand/model, and these new aeroflow fuel clamps look quite sexy.

Old vs new filter, see you again in 8 years :P

Everything reassebmled, new hose and filter on with the new style of clamps too. Tank shoved back into the car. Easy peasy!

Air intake mounting

My air intake arm has never been mounted securely, it's just rested on the air box and I suppose the filter wedges itself up against wheel arch. Not wanting to pay for a mount to be welded to the arm so I could bolt it to the strut tower (which would be ideal), I decided to try some 2mm steel sheet, bolt it to the fender 10mm and secure it under the filters hose clamp. It won't be completely mounting, but it should raise the filter off the wheel arch side of the engine bay.

Surprisingly it actually works! Quick coat of paint and jobs jobed.

Speed sensor mounting

Another job I've put off since doing the B18CR swap was mounting down the VSS. I must have ordered the wrong one, where the arm to bolt it down wasn't long enough. I've always left it unbolted...

The ugly but it'll work solution was to cut the end off the arm as this is where the bolt would want to go down into the gear boxes mounting spot, use a long enough bolt + washer to secure. Just like the air filter solution above, this worked perfectly as well!

Tow hook

I've always had a tow strap bolted to the back side of the bumper bracket but never had to use it. With my new trailer, I decided to winch it up so I can guide it up from outside, make sure its straight, and it's simply mucher easier. I then found out the strap's metal arm bent very easily with how it was bolted haha.. It bent the metal arm, and then bent the radiator support in front of it.

With the rush to get this prepared for next Thursday, I decided to mount it on the front, drill a hole through the metal arm and bolt it to a hole that already existed on the radiator support. I know this won't be perfect, but it'll do for now. I will need to sort out something better for the future.

Bonnet stay clip

Nothing major, but replaced the old half snapped bonnet stay clip with a OEM freshie!

Alignment

With everything else done, it was time for a quick alignment.
