Winton: Honda Nationals 2019

It's that time of year again, time to pack the ute, put the Civic onto a trailer and drive down to Victoria to race, woo! We left about 9am on the Friday to make the 6-7hr journey, this year my brother decided to join father and I on the trip. One goal, enter the 1.38s (current PB is a 1.40 from last year)

Saturday, race day. The day started off with a dead battery which was nice, due to a fault brake switch. Luckily, for some reason I actually brought a spare as I had my suspicions this was starting to stuff up.

1st session: As my previous Wakefield day testing the new coilovers was rainy, I had no idea if they were setup correctly, so I decided to go out with them set as is, and it was horrible. Car kicking out weirdly, felt very lose and just not nice to drive, resulting with a crappy 1.46 to start with.

Luckily Yez Racing were there competing as well, quick chat with them had me to set the top and bottom to the same position (so all settings I mention below is the top and bottom adjustments), and to set them to the middle range of the 32 avaliable clicks. Tyres set to 24psi cold throughout the day.

2nd session: I went out with them on Front/Rear: 20/32, I dropped straight down to 1.41 which was a good sign changing the settings helped, but I'm here to enter the 1.38s regardless.

3rd session: I changed the settings with the Front: 25/32 Rear: 15/32. The raise in the front and lower in the rear was because the rear kept trying to slide out, with the front feeling quite soft throughout the entire length of the corners. I resulted with a 1.39.6

4th & 5th sessions I changed between Front: 27/32 Rear: 13/32 AND Front: 27/32 Rear: 15/32. These 2 sessions I tried different lines, braking later, accelerating earlier however I kept getting 1.39.6s, 1.39.5s which was starting to annoy me, feeling I was doing everything possible.

6th session: jumped on YouTube and watched some vids of others to see how they take their lines, spoke to them in person for hints too. Kept the same Front: 27/32 Rear: 15/32 , final session of the day, told dad 'Get the trailer ready, I'm gonna send it'.

Went out, straight into it and achieved my 1.38.91!! I was so happy once coming back into pits and seeing the result, felt so good to get the time I came for. I did end that session a little early as I managed to snap my exhaust at the rear (I'll address in the next post).

What an amazing day, Honda Nationals is the best event of the year, planned out so well with a great variety of cars, and always great to catch up with my interstate friends. Just like to thank the organisers for this awesome day. Would like to thank my father and brother who helped as my pit crew for the day, I can do these events by myself and never force them to come, they just come for the enjoyment of the sport and support, including the good pub feeds on me. Below I'll post times for the day, my YouTube video and a spam of awesome photos from the photographers, thankyou to them for the photos of the awesome memories!!

Start of the day in the pits

New Honed Development gearknob, since I got the car I've used the OEM knob along side trying others here and there, always findign they are too small. Turns out Honed developed this one with similar reasons as they felt there was no good sized ones on the market. Feels great! Probably be a forever knob for the Civic.
